Most arguments against remote work center around the fact that the social aspects of teamwork suffer greatly. It is not possible to virtualize and access the social clues that are crucial in social interactions. When team members do not share a common physical space, they become unfocused and easily distracted. This is deemed true even if video conferencing is used.

As we have witnessed the struggles and potential of transitioning social media platforms and other applications from the 2D desktop environment into the 3D space of the Metaverse, it is becoming clear that the challenges we face are not merely technical, but also conceptual. After all, the 2D desktop environment was successful because it significantly improved productivity, despite its limitations in capturing social information. While 3D environments have the potential to better capture and represent social information through avatars, they present new challenges in terms of user interface and the experience of ‘being’ in such spaces.

However, the shift from 2D to 3D is not just about translating existing platforms and applications, but also about redefining the balance between content consumers and content creators.
